College students beginning their careers in natural resource fields are welcome to gain experience and learn more about careers in their chosen discipline. If an internship, senior project or other customized learning experience is part of your graduation requirements, contact us to determine if we have a suitable opportunity. We can work with your academic advisor to develop an appropriate program that will satisfy curricula and credit requirements.


Natural Resource Technician - FILLED

Position Description: Positions will be responsible for conducting a variety of fish, wildlife or forestry work including snag and downed wood assessment and inventory, cavity nesting bird surveys, fish presence/absence surveys, fish tagging, fish populations surveys, amphibian surveys, stream habitat assessment and forestry plot establishment and measurement. Familiarity with scientific sampling devices and protocols for these tasks is highly desirable. Successful candidates will receive training and work either independently or in small teams.

Job conditions are strenuous and require applicants to be in good physical condition and capable of traversing steep forested terrain in all weather conditions with a 35 pound backpack. Map reading skills, ability to interpret aerial photography and orienteering skills will be used on a daily basis. Positions are based out of Olympia, WA but overnight travel will be required. Company vehicles are provided for travel and lodging and meal costs are reimbursed while away from the Olympia base station.

Qualifications: Applicants must have completed a college degree in the biological sciences or other natural resource field or be actively seeking a degree in a natural resource management or scientific discipline. Upper division level students committed to a career track in natural resources are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will have demonstrated knowledge and appreciation for following rigorous sampling methods and collecting scientific data. Knowledge of fish and wildlife handling procedures, identification of Pacific Northwest native plant and animal species, use of electrofishing equipment and traditional natural resource measurement tools is highly desirable.

Salary: $12.50 - $17.50 per hour plus overtime, depending on experience

Duration: Variable by position, generally March 15, 2012 - September 30, 2012

 


 GIS Technician  FILLED

Position Description: Position is responsible for input and attribution of spatial data using GIS software, Position includes creation and management of geodatabases and production of map products. Incumbent will edit and create various coverage layers including shapefiles and datasets, and should be able with the use and processing of satellite imagery and raster data including LiDAR.

Qualifications: Applicants must have completed a college or technical degree program in GIS, Geography, Computer Science or related field. Successful applicants will demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and value rigorous scientific methods. Familiarity with a wide range physical and biological data types and their use in geodatabases is desirable. Must be proficient in Arc versions 9.2 and 10.

Salary: Depending on qualifications and experience

Duration: Project or permanent
