PIT Tags

Selecting the right PIT tag to achieve your project goals is critical.

The tag you choose can have lasting implications on your ability to change or modify detection equipment as your study progresses. For this reason, we stock a variety of tag sizes (8mm, 12mm, and 22mm) in several different models (full and half duplex, 134.2 kHz and 125 kHz) as well as implanting devices and accessories.

PIT tags and readers must be compatible. In addition, some antenna styles detect certain tag types better than others. We’ll make sure that the PIT tag you choose will work with your existing system. Contact us for a quote. If you are just starting your project contact us and we will help you to choose the best tag for your situation.

Antennas

Antennas

The antenna is one of the most important components of any PIT tag detection system.

With the time and resources invested in tagging your animals, you now must rely on a detection system to document their presence or movement patterns. The design and construction of the antenna for your site is critical. West Fork prides itself on crafting antennas that:

  • Deliver consistent read range
  • Are highly durable
  • Anchor with a simple, robust fastening system

WEST FORK’S HDPE INSTREAM PIT TAG ANTENNAS

We offer fusion welded HDPE antennas that are built to similar dimensions as the traditional glued PVC pipe used for NOAA-style antennas. HDPE material and the fusion welds are extremely durable and withstand much greater impact than the housings constructed of PVC. We developed production systems to ensure that the HDPE antennas perform as well or better than previous PVC models. Contact us to discuss the specific dimensions needed for your project.

CUSTOM PIT TAG ANTENNAS

We design and fabricate custom solutions for any situation. We have developed successful systems in detection environments where high EMI, close proximity to metal infrastructure, tag travel speed, and extreme weather and flow conditions would otherwise limit the use of PIT tag technology. Contact us to discuss the specifics of your situation.

VERTICAL PIT TAG ANTENNA SYSTEMS (FIN)

Detection of PIT tagged out-migrating juvenile salmonids in relatively large natural rivers is problematic because available PIT tag antenna systems are typically incapable of interrogating the upper portions of the water column where fish may travel. We have developed an antenna system dubbed the FIN (Fish Interrogation Nodes) capable of detecting fish through the whole water column at variable river flows and stages. These arrays are composed of individual vertical antenna housings anchored to either the channel bed or an above water support system through an articulated shackle that allows for deflection and passage of debris and ice.

Readers, Enclosures, & Cabling

West Fork uses the best available components and will select the right reader for your situation.

Once you select your reader, you will need a weather-proof enclosure to protect it. West Fork designed and manufactures an instrument enclosure (“POD”) suitable for housing a variety of reader types. Our aluminum POD houses one Biomark IS1001 reader or two Allflex 310 readers.

We can customize the cabling connections on our POD to meet your needs. We also manufacture accessories to help install the POD for instream installations The POD can also house a variety of data logging and power systems for other monitoring projects.

We also offer a variety of custom cabling solutions for PIT tag detection systems and other peripheral devices.

Controllers

Controllers

Controllers

Controllers

The controller acts as the central nervous system in the PIT tag detection system.

It supplies power, instructs how the antennas operate, and records data from the readers. Some controllers offer the ability of adding peripheral devices to monitor water depth, water temperature, air temperature, and turbidity. The controller stores the data from these multiple sources internally and on removable USB media for easy transfer of data.

We choose the best solution for the specific need.

Power Systems

Without consistent power, a PIT tag detection system cannot produce reliable data.

For sites that are located within reach of grid power, we offer a simple and cost-effective battery switching system that provides electronically quiet power to sensitive PIT tag readers. For remote site locations we will help you assess the use of solar power solutions or propane-fueled thermoelectric generators depending on your specific requirements.

& Data Management

Maintaining a PIT detection system can be difficult, especially in remote environments.

We’ve found that the simplest way to reduce operations and maintenance costs associated with site visits is to use remote communications. We offer cellular data solutions where cellular service is available and satellite communications where cell service doesn’t reach.

Several remote data management systems are available to obtain status updates for detection sites so that we can be prepared to address maintenance issues before going into a remote site. Verifying site operations or downloading data can be done from your desktop or mobile device.
