2026  Forestry Technician

Duties/Description:  April 2026 through June 2027. Duties include implementing standard forestry cruising methods within a variety of data collection systems. This would include application of standard protocols to both even age forestry plantations and grade cruising in more diverse naturally regenerated stands. Knowledge of methods used in nested, fixed-radius, inventory plots and variable radius plots is required. Familiarity with forest stands found across the PNW at all elevations and site conditions is desirable. Surveys may also capture data on forest structure and composition, understory, canopy conditions, downed woody debris, and other ecological elements. The successful candidate will have experience using relaskops, densiometers, range finders, GPS, increment borers, and be able to accurately identify tree and understory species. Knowledge of defects that affect log values is desirable.

 

Position will be field based. Work conditions are often strenuous and require traversing steep forested terrain in all weather conditions. Map reading, aerial photo interpretation and orienteering skills will be used on a daily basis. Positions are based out of Tumwater, WA but the workweek is highly variable and may consist of extended periods of work and compensatory time off. Company vehicles are provided for travel.

Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a degree in forestry or equivalent work experience and competency. The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability to follow strict sampling protocols and be proficient in the collection of scientific data. Prior professional experience in the field of forestry is highly desirable.

Salary: $26.00 - $32.00 per hour plus overtime, depending on experience.

 

Duration: Current job advertisement is for a 16-month project but could be extended or made into a permanent position.
